Can I Use Volunteers for Event Medical Cover?
29 May 2026 · 6 min read
What the rules say about using volunteer first aiders or charity ambulance services for UK events.
Volunteers vs commercial providers
Volunteer organisations such as St John Ambulance and British Red Cross provide event cover, often at lower cost. Commercial providers offer the same clinical capability with contracted service-level agreements, dedicated event medical planning teams and broader equipment.
What to check
Whichever route you choose, confirm: clinical qualifications and registration, public liability and clinical indemnity insurance, clinical governance arrangements, medicines management, equipment, and experience with similar events.
Mixed models
Many larger events use a mixed model – volunteer first aiders for general welfare, supported by commercial paramedic and ambulance resources for emergency response.
