First Aider vs Paramedic at an Event: What's the Difference?

The clinical roles found at UK events – first aider, EMT, nurse, paramedic and doctor – and when each is appropriate.
First Aider
A First Aider holds a recognised qualification such as First Aid at Work or FREC 3. They can manage minor injuries and provide initial response to medical emergencies but cannot administer prescription medicines.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
EMTs hold FREC 4 or IHCD Technician qualifications. They can manage a wider range of clinical presentations, deliver some medicines under Patient Group Directions, and crew an ambulance alongside a paramedic.
Nurse
Registered Nurses (NMC registered) bring hospital-level clinical assessment skills and can manage complex patients within their scope of practice.
Paramedic
HCPC-registered Paramedics are autonomous practitioners who can assess, treat and discharge patients on scene and administer a wide range of medicines.
Doctor
GMC-registered Doctors – often Emergency Medicine or Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine specialists – provide advanced clinical decision-making for the highest-risk events.
