Event Medical Cover Requirements in the UK

3 June 2026 · 7 min read

An overview of legal, regulatory and best-practice requirements for medical cover at UK events.

Legal duties

Event organisers have legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. These require a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, including arrangements for first aid and medical response.

Recognised guidance

Industry guidance you should be working to includes the Purple Guide, HSG195 The Event Safety Guide, and any sport-specific governing-body requirements. Local authority Safety Advisory Groups will expect to see these referenced in your event management plan.

What good cover looks like

Good event medical cover combines appropriately qualified clinicians, a documented medical plan, clear clinical governance, medicines management and integration with the wider emergency services.
